A transformational journey to develop the social consciousness and love for country needed for impactful, ethical, and compassionate leadership.
The Know Ghana Build Ghana (KGBG) initiative is designed to develop among Ghana’s youth a deep knowledge of Ghana in all its diversity – its peoples, their cultures, traditions, aspirations, priorities and challenges. This is conceived as essential to their preparation for the leadership needed to build Ghana’s future prosperity.
This pilot version of the KGBG series offers a most unique cross-country experiential learning program designed to bridge for participants the cultural divide that exists between the youth of Southern and Northern Ghana. It is a residential program that takes the South to the North and brings the North to the South.
Over a period of 14 nights and 15 days, participants will be immersed in a rich, multidisciplinary, and multifaceted program of learning that builds their knowledge of Northern Ghana in the following areas:
Language and Culture
History and Heritage
Traditional and Contemporary Arts
Literacy, Numeracy, ICT literacy
Science and sustainability
Economics and entrepreneurship
Community problem-solving
Personal Health and Fitness

Participants will undertake lessons in
Dagbani
The history, heritage and culture of the North
Traditional music, drumming and dances of the North
Cooking dishes indigenous to the North
Participants will be introduced to the following local industries:
shea butter
basket weaving,
pottery
smock weaving
art with Ibrahim Mahama (the artist) at his Red Clay Studio
Participants will engage in two key Service Learning activities:
Shekhina Clinic Feeding Program
Sanaahayili Basic School – support the development of literacy and numeracy skills among disadvantaged pupils; learning together to make solar lamps.
Working in groups, participants will undertake a conservation and sustainability-based STEAM Project. The project will revolve around the flora and fauna of the North.
From their base in Tamale, participants will undertake a road trip further North through places of historical, cultural and economic importance such as:
Savelugu
Bolgatanga
Sirigu
Navorongo
Ghana’s border with Burkina Fasso
A similar road trip for the return journey to Accra will take participants through:
The Kintampo Waterfalls
Kumasi, where participants will visit
Bantama and Manhyia to further explore the cultural significance of the North to Ashanti

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)
An important part of this educational program takes place immediately after dinner, every day. All participants must meet and reflect on the day’s activities and get informed about the next day’s activities, even though an itinerary will have been issued before the start of the program.

Air Transport – Participants will travel by air in one group to Tamale.
Ground Transport
In Tamale - we will use buses of the Savannah International Academy while moving around. These buses will pick participants up from Tamale Airport on their arrival.
Between Tamale, Bolgatanga and Navorongo – we will use a chartered VIP bus with police escort
Between Tamale and Kumasi – we will use a chartered VIP bus with police escort.
Between Kumasi and Accra - public transport by STC.
Participants will be housed in
the boarding facilities of the Savannah International Academy while in Tamale
the Comme-ci Comme-ca hotel during their overnight stay in Bolgatanga
KNUST during our stay in Kumasi
At the Savannah International Academy, each dormitory can hold up to 20 participants. Participants will share rooms; there will be between 2 and 5 participants per dormitory room, depending on its size.
Each chaperone or staff member will be assigned their own room throughout the experience.
All meals while in Tamale will be provided by Savannah International Academy who will take every necessary step to account for each participant’s allergies and/or other dietary requirements. Participants should make sure to include this information in their application.
Throughout the program, we will have easy access to good medical facilities. The program will be supported by qualified nurse who will be with participants in the residences and all through the program. If it becomes necessary to visit a health facility, participants will be taken to either the Habana Clinic or the Kamina Barracks Hospital.
There will always be a first-aid kit on the bus and at the residences.
Ask your family doctor for any required medicines (e.g., anti-malaria tablets), vaccinations and management plans for asthma, anaphylaxis, and the like.
Savannah International Academy has 24-hour security. However, when travelling between regions, we will always have a police escort just to make sure everyone is safe.
As emerging leaders of Ghana, participants will be expected to take care of their own laundry. To this end, time will be assigned for laundry in the weekly schedule. In exceptional cases, however, arrangements will be made for some participants to have their laundry done for them at a fee.
There is no broadband internet in Tamale. However, Turbonet will be loaded up for use during STEAM Project sessions as necessary.
Mobile internet services (Telecel, AirtelTigo, and MTN) are also available. Parents should ensure that their children have enough data on their mobile devices (phones and tablets) or are able to purchase data on the go.
Parents can easily communicate with their children on WhatsApp. However, we kindly request that, unless there is an emergency (which we should be informed about), conversations with families back in Accra be limited to the evening when participants have their free time. This is to allow them to focus and engage fully with the program.
NB: KGBG will not be responsible for any losses or damages to phones or other devices.
It’s the wet season, and the weather can be quite cool and chilly, especially at night.
Bring some rain gear and warm clothing.
Also bring smart casual clothes and shoes for visiting schools, going sightseeing (and going to church for those interested).
Consider bringing T-shirts, jeans, sneakers, and baseball caps.
You will be walking a lot, so bringcomfortable walking shoes.
Handy-wipes, bacteria hand wash, toiletries, bathing sponge and towels
Insect repellent and sunscreen lotion.
Bedsheets and pillowcases
All your medications (enough for the period), especially EpiPens and inhalers. Where necessary, bring along all prescriptions, management and treatment plans and notify a IMMERSE staff member on arrival.
Your phones and any digital electronics and chargers (where necessary) for photography and video recording.
You will need it for souvenirs, gifts, snacks etc. 200ghs – 500 ghs is recommended.
Books in English suitable for primary schools – basic readers and novels, comics, workbooks
Clothing – clothes, shoes, school bags, etc. in good condition
Sports and Games – card games, board games, puzzles, footballs, basketballs etc.
Toys – especially those that assist learning like Lego, dolls, toy cars/trucks, playsets (kitchen, hospital, fire service etc.)
NuBuED IMMERSE and SIA will engage, as chaperones, a team of educators with extensive experience in working productively with teenagers and young adults.
Chaperones have a significant role to play to ensure that the objectives of the program are fully realized. They are seen as professional partners in the context of the SIA, NuBuED IMMERSE and Select Journeys collaboration.
Details of their responsibilities will be shared at the time of their engagement. This may include undergoing first-aid training.
Again, as a precautionary measure, it would be advisable for parents/guardians to invest in a travel and health insurance plan for their child/ward. This is not mandatory
This is an educational trip, and as a participant, you are an ambassador for your school, your family, and your culture. These considerations should be reflected in your conduct throughout the program. The overriding principle here is to show consideration and respect for others, and for your hosts, their communities, cultural practices and ways of life
By joining the Program, students and parents acknowledge their acceptance of this Code of Conduct, which includes, but is not limited, to the following:
Program attendance is compulsory.
Every student must actively participate in the program and follow the daily itinerary.
No participant should engage in activities that would be frowned upon or considered criminal by the host community.
Any possession or use of, or involvement with illicit drugs, cigarettes, or alcohol is strictly forbidden.
Access to improper web sites and/or pornographic material is strictly forbidden.
Public displays of romantic affection should be avoided.
No student should injure/assault, threaten to injure/assault another or any other person.
An SIA or NuBuED IMMERSE staff member must approve all activities outside the scheduled ones.
No student (whether alone or with others) should travel within the local area unless accompanied by an SIA or NuBuED IMMERSE staff member.
Partying in the residences is strictly forbidden.
No student may visit the room of another student of the opposite gender
Failure to adhere to the above rules may result in a student being asked to leave the program or sent home at the earliest convenience, with costs incurred to parents’ account.
